In my first week of my PhD program in English lit, I met a man in the program who studies Renaissance lit. Upon learning that my friend, a new MA, and I both study nineteenth-century lit, he asked, “So, do you think women belong in the canon?” I thought he was joking, so I started laughing. He was not.
Later in the semester I was printing some signs and fliers for my students to analyze, some of which were from the campus student health center. He picked them up off the copier and said, “Are these yours? I know how women are always going to the health center because they think there’s something wrong ‘down there.’” He then chortled at his “wit.”
