People who know me the longest know that I’ve been writing(and performing) poetry since I am a teenager. I started writing shortly after 9/11, when I was sixteen years old. It has always been my way to self-soothe. Sometimes I go months and months without writing, but I always get back to it. Always. The physical act of putting ink on pages is something I recommend everyone try. It doesn’t have to be poetry or even words. I also recommend a good pen. I’ve been using the same exact kind of pen for eighteen years. Not expensive, but not cheap. I’ve probably filled 20-30 notebooks with verses. I have never referred to them as “poems”. I wrote this verse last night. My handwriting is a bit off because I haven’t written in awhile.

No blue check next to my name
I’m just a worker wondering who’s next today
No ICU rooms left
Who gives a damn what the influencers say?
A whole generation roped up in school debt
No degree seems worth it
the diploma won’t cover expenses
Who wrote -this- book?
the authors of the Middle Passage
And they still haven’t paid back those slaves
While they hold us to rent
We’re the workers and the owners are relentless
even in a global pandemic they still want that check
No home? Too bad.
No breath? The last gasps of the working class
Survive together or die alone
and that’s that
Build our own bridge or fall into the chasm
We’ve come to it ready to cross
with nothing but a helping hand
It’s all we really have

Ok first off, can we please appreciate the handwriting/font of this old boarding document? Wow. These old records are just beautiful. Doing some more @Ancestry stuff. Just found an immigration record for our great-grandmother Josephine (Giuseppa). This is the second great-grandmother that has a different name than I had always heard, and both of them are Americanized versions of Italian names. She left Palermo, Sicily on the S.S. Sant'Anna on August 25, 1912. She was seventeen years old, and had already been married to our great grandfather for three years by then. I’m not sure yet if he was on this same ship, but I know he also arrived in the USA from Sicily in 1912. They lived in tenements(which were eventually knocked down by Robert Moses and turned into the Projects) of East Harlem (1920 US Census) before moving to and settling in Astoria, Queens (1930, 1940 US Census).

Five years ago, today, Sarah Jones, an IATSE Assistant Camera Crew member was killed on the set of a movie in Georgia. She and the other crew members who were seriously injured never should have been on the active train tracks they were filming on. The crew was deceived and lied to by the people “in charge”, and the entire motivation for that deception was to save the production company money on rescheduling filming days.
Five years later, crew members routinely work 12-14+ hour days, which is industry standard, not including a break or commuting, putting their own safety and the safety of the public at large at risk. And again, these long hours are a result of the corporations we work for maximizing their profits by ignoring health and safety of crew members.
Five years later, our sets are not safer. More people have been killed on major motion picture sets in the last five years than in the twenty years previous.
We need to do better. A lot better.
