Playing Mother Nature

The Philip Johnson Glass House is celebrating its 65th anniversary this spring with a mesmerizing installation by Fujiko Nakaya, the first ever to interact directly with the house itself.

Fujiko Nakaya: Veil will be reminiscent of past projects executed internationally by the Japanese artist, creating an ethereal–and yet overwhelming–cloud of fog enveloping the Glass House. Created by pumping water at extremely high pressure through hundreds of nozzles, the fog rises and falls over time, responding to the natural environment in which it artificially exists. The particular Glass House incarnation of this projectwill serve to, at least temporarily, transform the building’s function and overall existence in its surroundings; every ten to fifteen minutes the house will fully disappear into the rising fog, leaving those inside with a sense of being totally suspended.

Fujiko Nakaya: Veil will be on view starting May 1, all the way through November 30, 2014 at The Glass House in New Canaan, Connecticut.
