The End of the World….
When I was asked to participate in a show about the end of the world, initially I thought this was a fun thing to do. The gallery was good, the artist list for the show full of respectable artists that I know and like. "Sounds great!“ I thought to myself. Then, when working on multiple ideas in the studio I was stumped by the endless array of the cheesiest most ridiculous scenarios that inevitably come to mind when we think of the end of the world. Finally, I came around to decide that this was an idea that was mostly thriving due to its value as entertainment, even if that value was also based on the potential threat we feel personally, or how much we’d love to see the opposite political side be set straight…its still entertaining to us. Its entertaining to think of all the things that could happen because of an end of the world event…even if that event actually turned out to be biblical in some way.
I put all the ideas down and drew this out. It seems like the best way for me to put all that into an image is up there, in the Hollywood sign, à flambé. The essence of the image is sort of a film noir kind of reality…where something really bad is happening, but somehow, it still looks so good. I mean, its at least 75 degrees in that image…you’d need sunglasses to see it in person : )
I’m calling it La Fin Du Monde en Noir. Pull out your shades and be entertained.
