BLSHS - Just Wait

BLSHS (pronounced Blushes) is a synthpop trio from Houston, TX, comprised of producers Chris Gore and Rick Carruth (of Neon Lips), and vocalist Michelle Miears. The band recently released their debut single “Just Wait”, and it’s a pretty special song, to say the least. A synth-and 808-heavy slowburner, it has everything you could ever want from 80’s-inspired synthpop: warm analog basses, reverb-drenched tom fills, epic side-chained synths, huge swirling leads, and a moving and soulful lead vocal.

While BLSHS aren’t pushing any boundaries here, I get the strong sense that nobody in the band would take this as a criticism. Not all music needs to reinvent the wheel. The kind of music BLSHS make requires just as much love and labor as heavy innovation, it’s just energy invested differently. “Just Wait” is clearly the result of a lot of love and attention to detail—from the emotionally nuanced and masterful production, to Miears’ enchanting inflections and tenacious vocal delivery.

BLSHS might be bordering on pure revivalism here, but “Just Wait” is such a gorgeous and well-crafted song, that I simply cannot hold that against them. Their debut EP, Abstract Desires, will be due out later this year on Teeel’s imprint, Synth Records. I for one will be listening (as should Nicolas Winding Refn and his music supervision team).
