Step-by-step photos of my notemaking process

pensandmachine:

As I promised last week, I took step-by-step photos of one of my summary notes this week. I’m gonna be using my materials engineering course summary as an example here.

image

So I open my lecture notes and the slides from this week, and draw up a brief outline of what the headings of my summary should be. I use headings from the slides, or chapter titles, or just make up my own.

image

I start with the big heading on top. This is the title that links everything in this summary together.

image

Below the title, I write down its definition.

image

I start filling up the page from the corner. I decorate empty-looking spaces with ribbons and boxes.

image

I link connected ideas by using arrows.

image

I know intuitively when it is necessary to use post-its so that I don’t run out of space. I always need to consider how much space I’m going to need for the rest of the summary.

image

I position the post-it on the side of the page and continue on the page.

image

I just have one diagram left, which will fill up the rest of the page. Since I like to put a box around diagrams I draw in a rectangular box.

Summary complete! (This summary took 1.5 hours in total)
