South Korea coined the word “Selca” (Self+camera) in 2004 when Koreans were using cellphone cameras as a matter of course already and uploading to eoljjang (Korean “eolgul”/face+”jjang”/best) sites from 2001. Koreans have been unapologetically doing “selfies” since the word was first coined in mainstream korean media in 2001 as what Americans are getting around to finally coin as the “selfie”-as-phenomenon now, spurred on by ubiquitous smartphone cameras and the advent of instagram. I’ve already put together the basic sources to write an article on the selfie and South Korean media culture. (at 타코벨 (Taco Bell))
