Scotty Dynamo - Backhanding it Down!
I’ve been a fan of Torontonian Scotty Dynamo for about a year an a half now ever since I learned about him through gay blogger, and Scotty’s bf, Davey Wavey.
Scotty’s music is a great mix of rap, hip hop, dance/techno and contains a wonderful infusion of a cheeky and cocky persona that plays very well. With lyrics like “models keep throwing it up like Tom Brady” and “I’ve been writing rhymes since Bobby Brown’s been smoking crack” he has injected humour into his music so you can help but wear a smile while listening to it.
Definitely danceable his music is great way to gear yourself up for a night on the town and I look forward to hearing his tracks in the clubs soon.
Scotty Dynamo is a breath of fresh air to the industry as a talented, cheeky, young (he’s not even 20), queer Canadian artist. He has put down some great tracks and has done so while attending University. Big props to this up and comer, I can’t wait to see what Scotty does in the future and I recommend that others check him out if they’re looking for some fun local beats.
You can purchase tracks from Scotty Dynamo on iTunes.

Jamaica - the Iran of the Western Hemisphere
Yeah, I said it.
Jamaica is probably one of the last places on Earth I will every visit. The homophobia that this country emits is rival to Iran. In fact I would go so far as to say that percentage wise Jamaicans are more homophobic than Iranians.
In Jamaica queer people are routinely beaten. Not by the random person but by lynch mobs. Picture being African-American in Mississippi back in the 50’s and 60’s and that’s what Jamaica is like today for Queer people, for those who don’t believe me google Gareth Henry - 13 of his friends have been killed by mobs in the past 4 years. There are no laws protecting queer people in Jamaica, in fact it is actually illegal to be homosexual there. The country has turned away Queer Cruise lines, though why one would want to port there is beyond me.
The country also consistently produces Dancehall and Reggae artists who boast about attacking/killing Queer people in their lyrics and encourage others to do the same “We burn chi-chi man and then we burn sodomite” (Beanie Man). Elephant Man was recently removed from one of Toronto’s Caribana concerts at Circa nightclub over intensely anti-gay lyrics as well.
My Dad’s side of the family is from St. Vincent (a country where homosexuality is also illegal) so by no means do I hate Jamaican/Caribbean culture, in fact quite the opposite, I just hate this part of it.
I hope that Jamaica and other certain Caribbean countries will learn to embrace love and equality but I’m not going hold my breath. Like Iran they have a LONG way to go. In the meantime it, and other countries like it, will remain on my no fly, no buy list.

Grammy’s Nominate Homophobia and Hate Speech
In a surprising move the Grammy’s have decided to nominate homophobic reggae “artist” Buju Banton for an award. Buju Banton is well known for spouting hate speech directed towards Queer people, advocating killing, beating, and burning them.

Harper’s New Anti-Gay Speech Writer - the Policy of Homophobia continues
I can’t take credit for this as it was provided to me but…
In this economy-worried, war-wearied political scene, it is these covert appointments that we must stay vigilant about, and pass on. Stephen Harper’s appointment of new speechwriter, former Calgary Herald columnist Nigel Hannaford is mentioned today in the Globe and Mail’s “Ottawa Notebook”.
QUOTE from the Globe Blog:…
Hannaford is being criticized in Xtra, the gay and lesbian newspaper, as someone “who has a history of speaking out against gay rights.” Xtra writer Jenn Ruddy notes: “In his Slings & Arrows column, Hannaford espoused socially conservative values, arguing against gay rights and undermining the legitimacy of human rights commissions.” Ms. Ruddy says that the hiring is just one is “string of appointments that place social conservatives in the upper echelons of the Harper government.”
