~ Independents’ Day Weekend: ‘Gone Home’, Detachable Heads, Doll Parts and Feral VectorsHere in Britain, Independence Day is not a holiday, for what are probably pretty obvious reasons, but I think we can all hopefully agree that, 238 years and three days on from the Second Continental Congress’ decision to separate legally from the Kingdom of Great Britain, everything has worked out reasonably well for all parties. The United States has risen to a preeminent position in global affairs, and the British have adorable accents and an open invitation to class up Hollywood. Also, without the Declaration of Independence Assassin’s Creed 3 would have been a far less interesting game, so there’s that, as well.
Plus, Canada is pretty great. So, well done, everyone. Well played!
Anyway. Since Friday in Britain was spent toiling in the coal mines, making Blackpool rock, tapping phones and generally doing whatever people do in a post-hegemonic nation, what better time is there to celebrate another kind of independence – the kind that leads to some of the most interesting contributions to video games? This has, conveniently, been a pretty full week for indie gaming, on both sides of the Atlantic.
