Q:Seeing as the lottery results are blowing up badly on social media and you're talking about "a learning process," here's an example of a problem: a LOT of notable indie LGBT creators are getting excluded from SPX 2015 out of pure randomness. If I was a paying attendee, I'd want to know the BEST creators are there, not ONLY the creators who got assigned a random number. You've left out (and alienated) a lot of deserving creators today. Laziness won over discretion.
Thanks for characterizing this as laziness and for your courageous anonymous comment. I’ll be sure to share your appreciation with our dedicated volunteers.
To echo my comments on Twitter…
I wish that we could leave everyone who participated feeling good and whole and appreciated (because you are, even when you are angry and crapping on us).
The system we have is not perfect but we’re doing our best to manage massive demand while keeping SPX truly open to anyone.
Given the scale, some of that openness is being left to chance based on a conscious choice not to apply an aesthetic judgment on the work.
The reason for that choice is to preserve SPX as a learning environment. We think that’s vital to our character and the community, as are LGBTA representation and racial diversity.
Many of you will - and obviously do - disagree with these choices but I hope you can understand them and appreciate the intent.
Also, I hope many folks who did not win a table will be able to find a spot to share with others. But table or no table, this show is yours.
SPX doesn’t belong to us. We are its caretakers. It belongs to you. The community makes it a great, nurturing, fulfilling experience.
I know that folks are upset that their number did not come up in the lottery. I would be too, but I’d ask that you consider your comments before lashing out based on assumptions or head cannon about this system.
In doing so many have spread misinformation and do a lot of unecessary damage when we’re accessible and happy to talk, answer questions or just get yelled at.
That’s fine. We’ll take it. We made this system and we’ll take the feedback and the criticism for it.
But we’re not the DMV.
We’re a dozen or so actual human beings who work tirelessly in the service of a better Small Press Expo: one that accepts as many people as possible, generates you as much money as possible, creates as many opportunities for you as possible, protects your creative rights as well as possible, and preserves your work for all time when no one else was willing.
Put another way, we’re on a mission and that mission is you - the vibrant, diverse, chaotic, challenging, creative community that lives this medium. One that doesn’t accept what is given, but asks for better.
We’ve spent 20 years earning and keeping your trust. I hope you’ll all stick with us for a long time to come.
