I am SHAKING with excitement after playing the Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies demo, and I had to write a post about this game. Luckily, Capcom Director of Localization Janet Hsu posted a really fascinating article about some of the decisions made in localizing the new game.

The discussion about Athena Sykes’ name is interesting, but her explanation of the process of making prosecutor Simon Blackquill make sense for Westerners is a really great read. 

Take for example, his samurai/Japanese tendencies. Both Victorian-era English and Japanese can be quite verbose and poetic, so when Blackquill spouts sword metaphors, the two styles blended together very naturally. Also, you’ll notice that in the localization, we’ve labeled him a samurai instead of a rōnin (which are technically a subset of samurai). This deliberate choice was made because samurai are simply more easily recognizable and readily understood by a Western audience than rōnin, especially when some people don’t even see a difference between the two in the West.
