Sign language interpreter at Mandela ceremony says he had a schizophrenic episode
Even to some who don’t know a word of sign language, Thamsanqa Jantjie’s hand flailing at the massive send-off to former South African president Nelson Mandela didn’t seem right. When the sign language interpreter was called out for signing gibberish in front of a zillion people worldwide was seen as a disgrace. But when Jantjie said yesterday that he is fluent, he was just having a schizophrenic episode, it became a matter of international security. The US is furious that a person with violent schizophrenia within feet of the most powerful people in the world. Oops.
