And so today, after 163 years, the News of the World shuts down

I haven’t covered the News of the World scandal, but the closure of the paper comes after the paper was jettisoned from Rupert Murdoch’s News International service after a widespread phone hacking scandal, in which Britain’s best-selling newspaper was caught hacking into the phones of murder victims, relatives of victims of the July 7 subway terrorist attacks and soldiers serving in Iraq. News of the World was well-known for its questionable journalism techniques, but this latest scandal was so far and wide, so appalling to pretty much everyone in Britain that Murdoch decided to shutter the publication.

That of course only gets rid of the paper from newsstands, but it’s just the beginning for the paper’s editors, who are facing inquiries from the British government and PM David Cameron has vowed to revamp media ethics oversight.
