2011 IHC Gift Guide: “Husk: The Hollow Planet”, the comic book based on the Kids in the Hall character Danny Husk

This would be a great gift for yourself or any other Kids in the Hall fan. It’s a graphic novel, written by Scott Thompson, based on his character Danny Husk from Kids in the Hall.

From the mind of Kids in the Hall’s Scott Thompson comes a hilarious, fast-paced comic based on his beloved character, Danny Husk. Danny Husk remains the unflappable everyday man. Whether he’s reading about his own kidnapping in the morning paper, or having his musk cause apocalyptic world peace, nothing gets him down or rattles his cage… until now! Danny finds himself in a new world where his average looks and demeanor make him an exotic, and highly-sought after individual. Danny must escape, with the help of an oddball cast of characters, and rescue his son before the Prince of Mu has them all executed!

It’s only got one review so far on Amazon, but it’s a good one:

I didn’t necessarily expect was to love this book on its own merits as a fantasy adventure. I wasn’t sure how he’d pull it off, wasn’t sure how strait-laced Danny Husk would fit in or if I’d find the characters cliche or the fantasy tropes tiresome.

I sure didn’t. I loved it. It’s funny, dark, emotionally resonant, and oddly, kinkily sexy. There are pleasing little unexpected touches, such as the fact that the kingdom in this world is not based on a medieval-European-style monarchy, or that the tiny giant really DOES have a glandular problem.

The different fantasy races have well-established points of view and backstories, the characters are well-drawn (in more ways than one) and Danny Husk, I realize, has ALWAYS been magical: he could fly, his sweat causes world peace…
