Kansas passes anti-Sharia law law that could also prevent them from passing anti-gay marriage legislation. So that’s a good thing

Kansas is the newest state to pass “anti-Sharia law” legislation, out of some sort of idiotic fear that evil early 1900s movie Muslims are just waiting at our borders with knives in their teeth to take over every nook and cranny of American life with Sharia law. Sure, there are some crazies who have that goal (above), but there are also people who believe they’re Elvis.

The law is sort of vaguely worded, with the intent of trying to prevent the use or application of foreign law in the US… which already isn’t valid. You can’t take legal action against anyone in the US using foreign laws unless they committed a crime in a foreign country. But it’s like that all over the world. But whatever, Kansas… do what you want.

This is the meat of the bill:

Any court, arbitration, tribunal or administrative agency ruling or decision shall violate the public policy of this state and be void and unenforceable if the court, arbitration, tribunal or administrative agency bases its rulings or decisions in the matter at issue in whole or in part on any foreign law, legal code or system that would not grant the parties affected by the ruling or decision the same fundamental liberties, rights and privileges granted under the United States and Kansas constitutions, including, but not limited to, equal protection, due process, free exercise of religion, freedom of speech or press, and any right of privacy or marriage.

But the irony here is that the same paranoid conservatives that pushed this legislation through might also be preventing themselves from passing any future anti-gay marriage legislation based on this bill.
