The longest traffic jam ever: Over 60 miles, cars not moving for 9 days outside Beijing

Outside of Beijing, the world’s largest traffic jam entered its 9th day today, with cars backed up 60 miles, with many people having been stuck there for days. People have been spotted playing chess on the hoods of cars and even setting up impromptu stands to sell things out of their cars to others that might need them. Chalk up another victory for Communism.

In short, increased traffic on the highway mixed with maintenance and construction. Britain’s Sky News reported the snarls have been commonplace since May as a result of a spike in the number of trucks using the roads, with the daily peak reaching about 17,000. In this specific case, cars and trucks have been piling up since August 14 on the National Expressway 100, which is also known as the G110, the major route from Beijing to Zhangjiakou. Officials expect the congestion to continue until workers complete construction projects on September 13, the report said.

Surprisingly, there haven’t been any reports of road rage, but after a while, if you’re stuck for hours or even days, there isn’t much you can do at that point but wait and sleep and play chess.
