FEMME4FEMME: Centering Femme Experience in Media Making is coming to AMC  2015!

What is femme identity, and why is it important?

Femme is a queer of color identity that is rooted in embodying a resistive femininity—a femininity that transcends and challenges white supremacist patriarchal ideas of femininity as white, of femininity as weakness, of femininity as not innovative. It is an identity specifically centering those folks who do not have access to traditional femininity. Our femme challenges these notions and embrace femme as power, as survival, as cutting-edge and as community.

Have you ever wished you could be with other femmes who saw you and appreciated your artistry? Have you ever felt like you are invaluable as a femme, or not femme enough? Why is it that men and masculine of center folks expect us to perform labor for our movements without credit? Have you ever felt erased, invisible or shamed in your communities? How can we shift this pattern so that we are at the center of our movements and are remembered for generations to come?  Femme4femme is a concept that centers femmes of color as agents of revolutionary change. It is a framework that allows us to support each other without relying on masculine of center people and focus on our own needs and desires. This track will address questions of femme erasure and survival. We will explore how we can come together using media, art and technology to create the stories and visions for ourselves.

We are looking for workshops that:

  • center around Black femmes, femmes of color, fat femmes, poor femmes, disabled femmes, trans femmes, immigrant femmes, indigenous femmes, femmes who live outside of the US, and femmes who hold many of those identities.
  • examine the ways femmes are desired, or not desired, and how we can combat internalized femme hatred in our respective communities and ourselves
  • focus on the ways femmes use media, from the artistry of makeup, to how hair is done, to the way bodies are dressed and how we use these things to survive, thrive and organize our communities
  • explore the ways that femme experience and femme media can create a vision for a more just society
  • expand the skills necessary to utilize media in telling our stories to combat femme erasure and authentically represent ourselves
  • challenge historical narratives that prize masculinity / masc people and whiteness as agents of change
  • construct strategies to build movements that center femme experiences so that our needs and concerns are met
