These words have stuck with me ever since I first heard them on a Occupy San Francisco March over a year ago now. I think it was my second or third Saturday march and the biggest I had been to yet. We were coming down Market Street back towards the Federal Reserve Bank when over the nearest megaphone to me I heard a rough voice rise over the chants of “Banks Got Bailed Out, We Got Sold Out” or whatever it was we were screaming, that said something along the lines of…

“When I was born and raised in this country I was promised a great deal of things if I worked for them, I was told I was lucky and that the ones in charge were looking out for me. I was told to believe this is freedom. They Lied.”

I never got to see who said this because when I located the source of the sound I saw a young, female protester (obviously not the rough, older male voice I had heard) placing the megaphone back to her own mouth and continuing the chants.

I went home later that day and wrote down what I could about the march and as much of that quote as possible.
