When we hired Jason Segel, we didn’t think, ‘Oh, this guy can write this.’ And we didn’t know how funny Seth was — we just thought he had a funny voice, and seemed like a weird guy, and it felt natural that he would be part of this group. And it took us a little while to go, ‘Oh, he might be like a genius-guy!’
There will certainly never be a project that we’re more proud of than Freaks and Geeks. When Freaks and Geeks ended, in a lot of ways it freed me creatively because I thought, no matter what else happens, I was a part of Freaks and Geeks. And I always thought, I don’t think I’ll ever surpass this, my magical moment.
