As we finished our seventh week of skill workouts with the team Tuesday, I took a moment to reflect on our progression.  We started our summer strength and conditioning program on May 19th with a core group of returning and transfer student-athletes, adding team members each week until we had the whole roster together at the beginning of July.  This group is incredibly athletic, energetic and hardworking, with their greatest asset:  they are coachable!  I have especially enjoyed these weeks because this group comes together every day with the desire to be better team mates and to create a team with a single focus:  Return and Advance.  Return to the NCAA Tournament and advance in the bracket.

Which leads me to my next reflection:  we have an outstanding staff.  College basketball is so competitive; it is essential to have a every person that works with the team be the very best, and we have that at ASU, especially with our veteran associate head strength coach, Rich Wenner.  Rich has been at ASU for 28 years and has worked with our program during my entire tenure.  He has an incredible impact on our team.  Rich works with our team roughly 50 weeks out of the year.  His efforts to develop each young man to the fullest potential is evident in the results we’ve all witnessed.  Think about James Harden when he arrived on campus!  Rich transformed James’ body, and James seeks Rich out every summer when he visits campus for a workout.   Rich is part of every practice, monitoring the team’s heart rate, he gives me feedback throughout practice on the team.  We are able to adjust workouts in practice and the next day based on his feedback.  That position is so important to our program is he is the best.

Rich is still an athlete himself, taking time to compete each year at the national level.  This summer he won three gold medals at the IPF World Championships in his age group M2 50-59/weight class 83 Kg.
