Ahh…the high-low skirt trend. It can go so right, but just as easily VERY wrong. What can go wrong, you say? So much! If the waistline sits in the wrong place, if the cut is not right, or if the shortest length falls at the wrong spot, you’re bound for wardrobe failure… no matter what your size! And you thought shopping for pants was annoying! Intent on wearing one? A few things to consider:

Shorter than a model? This look is best with heels. Lengthening of the leg is necessary, otherwise this skirt can turn into a frumpy mess. NO clunky boots (heel booties can work), flats, flat sandals, or god forbid, sneakers!

The waist should sit at your real waist. Many of us forget where that is these days thanks to the low-rise era of the 2000s. These skirts look best when sitting at the smallest part of your waist. Maybe a little higher than you are used to. Again, this will visually lengthen your legs.

The cut of the hem shouldn’t be severe, jagged, or pointed but also should be clearly "high-low".  If the length change is too subtle from front to back it will just look like bad construction of a normal skirt. Too subtle of a change in length starts to look too conservative/older instead of youthful and playful. Rough cuts, pointed or uneven hems, flaps and unfinished edges turn your look from chic to trashy.

For the love of God, keep it solid! There is already enough going on with this skirt! Solid colors keep the look slim and clean. If you insist on a print, minimally contrasting prints, with the big exception of stripes, can work. The cut of the skirt is the highlight, keep it that way.

Loose flowing top + loose flowing skirt = shapeless. If that is your goal, don’t waste your money on a skirt. Simply grab Grandmom’s day gown and rock that around town. Avoid the frumps by pairing loose with more form fitting.
