Mr. Burns Reflects - Looking Towards 2012 Films

With 2011 coming to a close, film critics and enthusiasts alike are looking forward to what next year is going to bring to us. This year we had some pretty big hits like The Deathly Hallows Part 2, X-Men: Fist Class, and Drive, but what can we look forward to next year? So far we have a good few trailers being released that showcase what we can look forward to in the world of film.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

Peter Jackson released the trailer yesterday for his newest and last (or should we say first?) installment to the J.R.R. Tolkein franchise. Ian McKellen returns as Gandalf the Grey, along with a very large and convincing cast of dwarves and one brave hobbit. The trailer is every bit of epic-ness Middle Earth fans have been for and is once again looking to be a major success for Mr. Jackson. Look for this film to hit theaters next December.

The Dark Knight Rises

Director extraordinaire Christopher Nolan returns for the finale of his Dark Knight franchise. Coming off the success of the last two Batman movies (The Dark Knight reaching #9 on IMDB’s top 250), as well as Inception (the current #1 voted movie of 2010-2011 on IMDB), everyone is looking for this film to once again deliver on a huge level. Bringing back all the original characters as well as a few new faces, Joseph-Gordon Levitt and Tom Hardy, looks to make this final film one that DC fans and avid movie-goers alike stare in awe. Look for this to hit in Summer 2012.

Brave

The newest film from Disney’s hit studio Pixar is a little different from their other work. The film Brave follows the Scottish Princess Merida, a brave young girl who’s archery skills are more prominent than her royalty, as she decides to break the customs of her people. She wants to make her own fate and decides to become an archer instead of a royal bride. The film looks to have a strong feminist side, but is more than likely going to prove influential and promising none the less. Look for this one in Summer 2012.

Marvel’s The Avengers

If you went and saw this year’s Captain America in theaters, you were treated to a little preview trailer for the Avengers movie which has been hinted at in all of Marvel’s latest releases. The official trailer was released in October and it looks very promising. All the original actors return for their roles, except for Dr. Banner (the Hulk). The clash of the character’s personalities mixed with the need to save the Earth will no doubt give us an interesting show. Look for this one May 4, 2012.

John Carter

Another picture coming from Disney studios next year is the adventure/sci-fi film John Carter. The movie is based on the first book in Edgar Rice Burrough’s “Mars” series, A Princess of Mars. It follows John as he is put on the planet and faced with the challenges of helping lead the people (or aliens) to their survival. The movie is filled with fantasy aspects that reminisce on Star Wars and Avatar alike, and looks to be stunning. It hits theaters on March 9, 2012.

The Hunger Games

From the best selling Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins, comes the film adaption of the first book. The Hunger Games is a series about a young girl, Katniss Everdeen, who enters the games in order to save her sister. The Hunger Games are an annual event in which a male and female from each district (the nation is divided due to a large war long before the story begins) must compete for their lives. The story is a compelling one for males and females alike, as well as younger and older crowds. While some of the characters casting is questionable, the movie itself looks very promising. Look for this one on March 23, 2012.

That does it for this one. If I’ve left any good ones out you can shoot me a message, and I’ll give them a look. I’m hoping to find more films to put up a part 2 of what you can look forward to in 2012. Thanks for reading and go watch some movies!
