Festival of the Future City: Cities fighting childhood obesity

Some cities, designers and child-health advocates that ‘ground markings’ could be part of the solution to childhood obesity in the USA. ‘Ground markings’ are shapes, pictures or games drawn onto the surfaces of play areas, and include readymade hopscotch squares, giant maps and big circles to jump between.

A number of studies have found that these ground markings can increase the amount of energy children expend on playgrounds and in play spaces. However, other studies have found that the novelty of ground markings can wear off.

The Festival of the Future City takes place 18-20 November 2015. It is a key part of Bristol 2015 – when the city is European Green Capital. The festival is supported by Arts Council England, Bristol City Council, Future Cities Catapult, University of the West of England, Business West. Further details will be released in spring 2015.
