A friend of mine and I would always joke about how some people may appear skinny but aren’t in good shape. We’ve always said that “just because they’re thin doesn’t mean they’re healthy.” A study conducted by the Mayo Clinic confirms that people who look fit and lean might actually be “fat” and be at risk for the same diseases obese individuals are prone to. My friend and I refer to it as “skinny fat”, however. In scientific terms, it is called normal weight obesity.

This article is interesting because it states that if your lean muscle percentage is higher than your body fat percentage then you’re considered to be in great shape, however. If it is the other way around then you need to get back to the gym.

I hope a study like this doesn’t make insecure people even more uncertain about themselves. We live in a superficial society where people think they have to look a certain way to be accepted. Females and gay men especially are prone to this ideal and I hope a scientific study like this doesn’t make things worst. At the end of the day, I guess this is where intelligence and self control come into the picture.
