Floating Coffin by Thee Oh Sees (2013) (clear, blood splatter vinyl) Castle Face Records.

I’m not trying to go all “fanboy” and I know it’s a cliche to say things like “they just get better with every album”, but is it a cliche if its true? Dwyer and friends have been refining they’re particular brand of garage crunch and psych weirdness over the course of 30 or so releases and Floating Coffin is not a great departure from the formula that makes an Oh Sees record. It’s a slight tweak to that formula. This record definitely has more of a bottom than previous releases. It gives a lot of the tunes a heavier, grunge like feel (when these songs hit, they HIT). Fuck it, I hate talking about what technical elements make this an awesome record. It’s just awesome. It’s like you love pizza, and you’ve spent you’re entire life trying to find that perfect slice. And one day you happen upon a pizza joint that offers a slice that puts all others to shame. Your life has become complete. And then the next time you go there, the pizza has somehow gotten better!! And every time you go back it continually gets incrementally better than the last time!!! How? Who cares!!! So there you go.

Thee Oh Sees. The pizza of music.
