Artist talk with Steina Vasulka

image

Oslo Screen Festival is proud to invite the video pioneer Steina Vasulka for an artist talk and film presentation on March 8th at Filmens Hus!

Steina Vasulka was trained as a classical musician and performed, in the 60s, in the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra. She began working with video in 1969 and her various videos and installations have been exhibited in the United States, Europe and Asia. She has been involved with interactive performance, playing a violin adapted for digital movement of video images displayed on large screens. In 1971 she founded, together with Woody Vasulka and Andres Mannik, The Kitchen: a place for electronic media, video, cinema, music and performance, which marked the New York alternative scene. Since 1975, Steina Vasulka directs all her work around the concept of Machine Vision, which designates the search for a constant perception of space by machines, a perception that escapes the conditions of human vision. In 1992, Steina and Woody Vasulka together received the Maya Deren Award, an award attributed by the American Film Institute (Los Angeles, USA) to distinguished artists working in development and renewal of cinema and video.
