KIROBO The Robot Astronaut - “Robot companion to Astronaut Kochi Wakata”
Japan has launched Kirobo the world’s first talking robot astronaut into space. It’s mission is to serve as companion to astronaut Kochi Wakata.
It’s part of a study to see how machines can lend emotional support to people isolated over long periods. Alongside Kirobo the mission has a back up crew member, a twin robot on Earth called Mirata, who will monitor any problems its electronic counterpart may experience.
The small robot is only 34 cm tall and has a wide range of physical motion. Its design was inspired by the anime character Astro Boy.
