If tons of ain’t shit rappers can coexist in the music industry why can’t we let our pop divas thrive without constantly comparing them?
Why is that, at least in pop and hip hop, there can only be one successful female? Why do we have to degrade other women in order to praise one? Perhaps it is internalized misogyny, a fancy phrase which means we’re conditioned to think that women ain’t shit. Society has made us used to seeing men succeed, but it seems that we are unable to process having more than one successful female at a time.
It’s okay to stan for your favorites. In fact, I welcome it; that passion is entertaining. But we could have more songs like “Telephone”,“Feelin Myself”, “Bang Bang” and “Fancy” if we stop making our pop divas feel like they can never be anything but competitors. Sending the message that we can only have one great female vocalist at a time sets an unwelcome tone for other fields in our society too.
