We’ve officially reached that annoying time of year where it’s sweater weather in the morning, but by midday you die from a heatstroke.
On the one hand: I never like to see one-dimensional women characters. I want to know more about her, and for her to be developed beyond Exposition Fairy. Also, she and Ichabod are married and he hasn’t been conscious of time passing for the past 200 years, so I want to see him honor that relationship. He clearly loves her, and I don’t like rooting for infidelity.
On the other hand: I ship Ichabod and Abbie like Fed Ex. They have great chemistry and they’re definitely compatible as friends and partners. (Also, just LOOK at them, they’re beautiful.) I wonder if they’re going to explore Ichabod learning about modern relationships of equals vs. Revolution-era gender dynamics - that would be interesting and cool and wouldn’t have to be heavy-handed. And, yeah, if that involves processing through his relationship with Katrina, complete with actual character development for her, that would be awesome too because nuance, complexity, etc.
I also acknowledge that there are reasons some people ship Ichabod with people other than Abbie that have nothing to do with the fact that she is Black. HOWEVER, there’s a fuck of a lot of racism (acknowledged and unacknowledged) out there, and I get twitchy about anything that gives ammunition/an air of legitimacy to that subsector of anti-Ichabbie sentiments. So I can’t help having mixed feelings about Katrina. If it was just a question of writing, I wouldn’t have concerns because I trust the SH team…it’s the fandom that worries me. I haven’t seen (or felt) such complete unbridled joy about any show in a long time, and I’d hate to see more widespread fuckery.
