WHAT is AAPILS?
The Teach For America New York region will host 30 selected students to attend the Asian American and Pacific Islander Leadership Summit (AAPILS), whose mission is to cultivate and increase leadership skills of AAPI undergraduate students. Teach For America is uniquely positioned to make a difference in the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community. While AAPIs comprise nearly 4 percent of the total enrollment in public elementary and secondary schools, they represent only 1.5 percent of the teachers. AAPILS will drive the work of engaging undergraduate students in partnership with regional and national organizations that focus on working with and serving the AAPI community. There are multiple aims of the summits:

  • have participants reflect on their own AAPI identity;
  • develop participant understanding of AAPI history;
  • identify role models and advocates in the AAPI education community;
  • be empowered to advocate for and with our community partners and their work; and
  • help participants view how they can have an active stake in advocating for educational equity.
