While it is true that hummingbirds are attracted to the color red, the bright color of the feeding station itself, their memories of food locations, and seeing other hummingbirds going there for food will make sure they're attracted to your feeder. You could also plant red tube-shaped flowers in your garden to attract them, if your feeder is old and faded from the sun.
Plus, you can make hummingbird food with regular white cane sugar in the correct water to sugar ratio, you don't need spend more money on the special sugar. The only real benefit to hummingbird sugar is that the crystals are a finer grain, so it dissolves faster in water.
