Virtual Boy Scouts Earn Merit Badge at Smithsonian LVM
Camp Kawabata is a boy scout and cub scout troop that resides in Second Life and is the largest and oldest running troop on the virtual network. This troop of avatars age 5 to 18 enjoy activities at the camp that range from hiking and horseback riding, to boating and paintball, as well as field trips to explore locations within Second Life that present great learning opportunities and Smithsonian LVM was one those places. All the members have “sworn an oath to the Scout Oath or Cub Scout Promise. These virtual scouts earned the Second Life Cultures Merit Badge as part of their visit during the 2013 annual Dia de los Muertos 3D celebration, held on the UTEP Miner 1 island where our Day of the Dead collections are being hosted on loan by University of Texas at El Paso. Scouts learned about the popular celebration and made “Ofrendas” or altars for the occasion. We hope this troop will visit again to experience other collections within our virtual museum, and we were just trilled that so many came on their visit. The photos captured during their visit show how much fun they had exploring!
Camp Kawabata is a great example of how Second Life can be a place for adventure, where adults can be a kid again. Visit their blog, http://scoutcamp.secondlifekid.com/ to learn more about the camp and how you can become a scout too or visit the camp in Second Life.
