Exciting News from the World of Art
I don’t know how many wonders of the world there are by now, but it is possible that the Google Art Project will someday join the list.
I was a little abashed that it’s been so long since I visited the Google Art Project, but this article in the New York Times reminded me to head over there and take a look again. I was amazed at what I found. I chose Monet as the artist to take a spin with. I was disappointed that the Cleveland Museum of Art’s panel from Waterlillies does not appear, but I was happy to find paintings from Toledo (Ohio), Kansas City (a Waterlillies panel I’ve actually seen), Liverpool, Australia, and France. I can cheer for this virtual collection and hope that I remember to visit regularly as the collection grows.
Also noted in the Times this morning is a Guggenheim Foundation project “to work with artists, curators and educators from South and Southeast Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and North Africa. In addition to bringing curators from those parts of the world to the Guggenheim Museum in New York and organizing exhibitions that highlight art from their regions, the program will acquire art for the Guggenheim’s permanent collection.” Everything about this project sounds right to me. The Guggenheim Foundation director says he’s hoping to challenge “our Western-centric view of art history” and thinks success will depend on reaching people with a sense of adventure. I say right on.
This sounds like the perfect reason for regular trips to New York, but plans call for exhibitions to travel to two cultural institutions besides the Guggenheim.
