Selma (dir. Ava DuVernay).
DuVernay’s dramatization of a portion of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s life and the civil rights march in Selma, Alabama is a high achievement in recreating history as narrative. The film is thoroughly moving with a powerful message while never wavering or glossing over hard truths. David Oyelowo’s towering performance grounds the difficult, real-life subject matter in a very American setting and context.
