Thatโs because pop, as a musical genre, is most precisely defined by what it isnโt: not country, not rock, and not rap. Swift isnโt any of those, but she isnโt 100 percent pop, either โ sheโs still too unique, too identifiably herself.
Fans of Taylorโs earlier work complain that this former country singer (was she ever, really, an actual country singer?) now makes electronic pop music โlike everybody elseโ. The truth is, nobody else is making electronic pop music quite like this.
At the Bleachers show in Williamsburg in March, Dunham watched from the rafters with Taylor Swift, with whom Antonoff wrote the Golden Globes-nominated song โSweeter Than Fiction.โ Antonoff is a hardcore Swiftie, and he talks about her with the protectiveness and pride of an older brother. โWe live in a fascinating time where thereโs a weird shift in pop, and certain pop stars arenโt really resonating in the way they were,โ he says. โThe reason why Taylor stands above everyone else is because sheโs a songwriter. She sits in rooms and she writes songs. Most importantly, they sound like her. All the other pop stars, to put it in a really simple way, theyโre just not as talented.โ Swiftโs ability to craft her own material is what sets her apart, he believes. โOther pop stars have to go through, like, a goth phase. You can imagine the marketing meetings behind other pop stars. Whereas the meeting behind Taylor is like, โWrite a great fucking album,โ which she can.
"i was a fan of taylor swift until her downfall into generic pop" go and drink ur green tea and listen to the beatles on vinyl i don’t care about ur sad pretentious opinion
what is “generic pop” anyway?
Popโs new princess is well deserving of the title on her debut album in the full fledged pop genre. Not a banjo in sight as Taylor dishes out songs that could easily be on a Lana Del Ray album โWildest Dreamsโ or Pharrell one โShake It Off.โ She makes fun of her own reputation and still yearns for love without contradicting herself. Itโs by far her strongest songwriting, somehow both universe and specific. โOut Of The Woodsโ should open a lot of peopleโs eyes to just how good she can be.
today at the bookstore i asked the lady working if she had any lgbtq books that i could check out and her eyes magnified in what i mistook as horror and i thought i had offended her and then she said “i have a bag of lesbian fiction in the basement i’ve been waiting for someone to finally ask” and she all but burst down the stairs to get them for me
bless
"I have a bag of lesbian fiction in the basement" is my new go-to pickup line
are we sure it’s something good to say?
I’m reading all these articles lately and I don’t get the point because there’s always something missing.
The question is interesting to me: can a pop star afford to stay apolitical in our current climate? I mean, interesting, but totally unexplored in this article from The Ringer by Alyssa Bereznak.
We have a bigger problem than “silent popstars”: unprofessional journalism.
I used to think that if you want to write an article about something political the least you can do as a journalist to write a good peace is to fully argument your thesis. But that’s not how it works. You just leave it there, a few hints here and there to prove a vague point. I don’t like that.
Alyssa, my dear…
(rants begin, sorry)
You think that Taylor should openly speak about her political opinions because you truly believe that would make a difference? Well, you also state that there’s no real evidence of any kind of impact when other pop stars did it. Why is it different when it comes to Taylor? Is Beyonce less influential? Unanswered doubt.
Why can’t I find in your article a single word about the impact of one of the biggest recording artists that openly supported Donald Trump? Isn’t that helpful to prove your point? Unanswered doubt.
You so widely talk about feminism and not a single word about how Taylor handled the trial against David Mueller? Isn’t that useful when you’re trying to say that she’s not a real feminist ‘cause she didn’t go to the Women’s march but just tweeted about it? A feminist is a good feminist only when she takes good photos at a march? Not a single word of her constant support of her female fans, not a single word of how hard she tries to always say something motivational and empowering for young girls? Do you have access to YouTube?
Unanswered doubt.
I don’t get the point, really. Did you want to write a piece about the influence of pop culture in this historical period? Try again…
This is just a pointless rant, sorry if I’m rude. Weak unsupported thesis with big, big holes in it. An attempt to twist not only an artist actions but also her silence. When are you gonna write an article about ethics in journalism?
Alyssa doesn’t like Taylor’s marketing strategies (a bad copy of what Radiohead did lately in her opinion) and doesn’t approve of her silence when it comes to politics. Good to know. It took less than almost 5 thousand words to say it…
