Incompetent Fangirl: For all you Crystal apologists (who exist, for some reason)

“He’s been doing that impression for a long time…”
He’s been racist for a long time. Also, he’s undoubtedly been called on it, so he’s not even being racist out of ignorance. This is knowledgeable, willful racism. Eww.

“He’s not white, he’s Jewish…”
Still racist. One oppressed group oppressing…

girl….speak on it! *snaps fingers*

:D

I am so jealous of people who are good at snapping their fingers.  My snapping skills are kind of pathetic, haha.

So, this post has brought out a couple of Billy-Crystal-stanning-anons, which just amuses me to no end.  My first ever anonymous hate messages!  I’ve been waiting for this day for three years!

Just to answer a few points that were made:

  • I don’t know where you got the idea that I’m fourteen, but that’s not even close to my actual age, haha.  I graduated from college several years ago, in case you’re wondering.
  • Blackface is racist.  The only people who can reclaim blackface are black people.  The only people who can reclaim a means of oppression are the people who are actually oppressed by it.  If you are not black, you cannot reclaim blackface.
  • Blackface is blackface is blackface.  It doesn’t make it better because he dressed up as a specific black person.  It also doesn’t make it okay if a couple of black people told him it was okay (which is the “I can’t be racist, I have black friends!” argument again).  I never said Davis was a stereotype or that he wasn’t a human (I don’t even know where you got that idea?).  I said that a white man wearing blackface, even if it’s the face of a famous person, is still blackface and is still racist.

  • Doesn’t matter that he’s been doing it for ages.  Doesn’t matter that he’s done it on SNL.  Doesn’t matter that he’s portrayed other characters in blackface.  Blackface is blackface, and blackface is racist.

  •  Did you really think I didn’t know any entertainment history?  Well, I do.  In fact, for about ten years of my life, TCM was constantly playing in my house.  Hardly a week went during which I didn’t see Eddie Cantor or Al Joleson or Judy Garland or Mickey Rooney or Shirley Temple or someone perform in blackface.

I talked about the Oscars incident on this blog because it’s relevant to the recent incident of blackface on a Korean TV show, which I’ve covered here before.  When that happened, we had lots of North American kpop fans patting ourselves on the backs, shaking our heads at Korea for their old-fashioned racist ways.  And yet, here we are.  Broadcasting a very famous American actor alongside a very famous Canadian singer, both of whom are white and one of whom is in blackface.  Not only was it a TV broadcast, but it was one of the biggest TV broadcasts of the year and was being shown all over the world.  And the bit was pretaped- how many people had to approve of this idea before it aired, knowing full-well its contents?

I find it a little strange that anyone intentionally sought out my little kpop blog to stan for an old white man in blackface, behind their own anonymous greyfaces.  Especially since the angriest message came from someone who thought I was fourteen!  What kind of adult screams at a supposed fourteen year old over the internet for saying ‘don’t be racist’?

Keep it classy, tumblr anons.
