Bare A Pop Opera
So, I’ve been a fan of a show called Bare: A Pop Opera since I saw the video on YouTube about six years ago. I didn’t understand it when I was thirteen, what it really meant, until I was sixteen. The story is of these two boys, Peter and Jason who are seniors at a Catholic high school, and they’re in a relationship together but they keep it secret. The musical is of Peter’s wanting to go out into the open with their relationship and Jason’s reluctance. Jason later impregnates a girl named Ivy. So, in the end Jason commits suicide after his relationship with Peter is outed by Matt, a boy who was in love with Ivy and jealous of Jason. So, like I said, when I was sixteen I rediscovered the show and the songs and the story were amazing and hit me close to home. Especially in Act 2, Peter comes out to his mother who has a song called ‘Warning’ which is her knowing that her son was gay but that she was too afraid to realize it. The number is touching and I’m not doing it any justice through description. Anyhow, last year I found out that they were reviving it, and of course living in California I knew I’d never see it. However, I read an article and I saw how much they had changed from the original story. They changed the opening number from a song called Epiphany in which Peter has a nightmare in church to a song called A Million Miles From Heaven which is sung by all. They changed a lot of the characters, and what pissed me off is that they changed the character of Nadia, Jason’s sister, completely. In the show, she and Ivy are roommates, Ivy is skinny and beautiful and Nadia is overweight and still pretty. She has this beautiful number called 'A Quiet Night at Home’ which is my favorite song in the show. In the new revival, they cut that song out, made Nadia the outcast drug dealer who is skinny. In the revival they cut a lot of really good songs, like Spring, Auditions, Ever After, God Don’t Make No Trash, Warning, Epiphany. I watched the revival on Youtube and while I can appreciate the show, I don’t like what they did with it. While, the original show did bother me from a writer’s standpoint, I did love the show with its flaws. I don’t know, I’m sure if I saw the show live it’d be a huge difference but my heart stands with the original show. I don’t want to be a show snob but I felt like the original show was a lot better.
If he was younger, Aaron Tveit would be the PERFECT Jason in Bare: A Pop Opera. I mean, he has the perfect ‘golden boy’ look and plus he’d strip down to his underwear and who wouldn’t want to see that.
i’m watching Bare on Broadway and i really don’t understand why any of these changes were made like Bare wasn’t perfect off broadway but this is so much worse
It tried so hard to be ‘Spring Awakening’. Plus, they cut Peter’s mother out of it which pissed me off. 'Warning’ was the greatest song in that show, it was the most powerful moment and I don’t understand why they felt the need to try to 'revamp’ it
