Sundance 2014: A Newbie’s Guide
Every day from January 16th through the 21st, take a peek inside the Sundance Film Festival through the eyes of Hulu’s three reporters (who have never been to the fest) covering each aspect of Park City life when Hollywood comes to town: films to check out, things we overhear, celebrities we spot, and basically every weird thing we experience in between. We’ve got you covered.
Day 1: Thursday, January 16, 2014
9:38 a.m. We traversed a maze of icy patched parking lots on our way to Sundance HQ, only to be lured away from our mission by the warm aroma of freshly baked bread at the Windy Ridge Bakery. Empanadas and baby pot pies later followed.
10:04 a.m. Downside: We just saw a furry dead animal half-buried in snow. Upside: We found a dollar on the sidewalk corner of Kearns and Bonanza!
10:30 a.m. Just passed by a restaurant called “Adolph’s.” Yeah, we’d probably never name our restaurant that.
11:08 a.m. Getting free bagels and coffee at the YouTube lounge. Every morning at 7:30 they hold a yoga class. Ah, lifestyles of the nouveau riche.
12:20 p.m. One of us is getting her free veggie burger at the Morningstar Farms Pop-Up restaurant, while the other is thankful for a free Coke and the caffeine it provides. The meal comes with new “Cheez It Grooves,” which are drier and less flavorful than regular Cheez Its. We do not approve. Upside: We realize that we will never go hungry at Sundance.
1:37p.m. At the Sundance press conference: Held back laughter–but definitely not an eye-roll–when a reporter lamented to Robert Redford how materialistic mainstream culture has become, yet Sundance is a respite from all that. Clearly she hasn’t been invited to any of the gifting suites in Park City.
1:45 p.m. Just got an email to RSVP for the pre-party for the Sundance HQ party. There are pre-parties for actual parties. #onlyatSundance
2:10 p.m. It’s so warm, we unzipped our winter coats and stuffed our scarves in our bags. Park City winters aren’t so bad after all!
2:30 p.m. Walking around Main Street we couldn’t help but notice that everyone here–from volunteers to Hollywood insiders–seem to have the same pair of boots. Sorel is the new UGG.
7:45 p.m. At dinner we realized that living in California has spoiled us for Mexican food in all other states.
8:53 p.m. Overheard during the screening of “Lilting,” starring our Tumblr crush Ben Whishaw: “If you want to be guaranteed good shit, you go to docs." And no, she wasn’t talking about drugs.
11:04 p.m. OMG it’s so cold.
11:12 p.m. Observed at the Day One party: Sundance is the only place where a guy checks out a woman for her name tag and not what’s underneath it.
