We got some burning questions answered today at ABC’s Once Upon a Time in Wonderland panel, a show that asks: “What happened to that girl when she grew up? How did those adventures affect her?” According to the trailer, stuck in an insane asylum and in love with a genie. Oof.
Here’s what we learned:
- Once Upon a Time in Wonderland will exist concurrently with the Once Upon a Time (OUAT) universe but will stand alone with its own mythology. Barbara Hershey will be back in flashbacks as the Red Queen.
- Alice’s home isn’t in real Victorian England - that’d be impossible, since she’s living concurrently with modern-day Storybrooke from OUAT. She’s from a fictional Victorian England that’s a land of story - much like the other lands visited on OUAT.
- Sebastian Stan fans should be bummed: He has an open door to reprise his OUAT role as the Mad Hatter, but his schedule (Captain America, anybody?) will probably not allow him to return. Everybody’s just as disappointed as you are. However, “We’re never going to have a Mad Hatter that’s not played by Sebastian,” says EP Edward Kitsis (the self-proclaimed President of the Sebastian Stan Fan Club.) “We’d move heaven and earth to let him come back.”
- John Lithgow will play the white rabbit. Yep. An Roger Daltrey will be back as the hookah-smoking caterpillar.
- Alice had a terrible childhood and was often ignored, which is why “she’s trying to prove to her father that this is real to win his love.”
- This version of Alice is kind of a badass. “She’s tough, mentally and physically. She can kick ass and look after herself,” says star Sophie Lowe. “We never meant for her to be a damsel in distress,” say the EPs. “We like the idea that she’s going back down the rabbit hole, sword in hand, to find her man.” Sound Snow White-ish to you?
