Luke Jeffrey Grundman
*Insert obligatory statement about not posting as much as I want here* Right, now that I have that out of the way, let’s move onto something new and fun. If you did not guess by the title, I’m about to post some photos of a person. Particularly, I am going to slap some images up here of a little dude who was merely a week old at the time of his photo session. Talk about stepping outside of my comfort zone!
Yes, I had the honor of taking photos of little Luke for Blake and Jenelle Grundman. I spent a few days looking at newborn photos to get some ideas, but I also wanted to put my own spin on this. What I found during my research is that most newborn photos are brightly lit, generally come with fades and pastel colors, and usually have the baby in a basket at some point. Thusly, I went with one light and planned to use natural lighting as much as possible, and I ditched color in favor of my favorite monochrome style.
What I learned is that I need a light that adjusts in power. I shot everything between ISO 2000 and 3200, which means I ended up with a good bit of noise. Newborns are not nearly as cooperative as my employees are. The joys of a new family just…made me happy. I learned, I experienced, and I had fun.
I went into this with a whole lotta self-doubt. After posting some screen captures, I was encouraged by a fair amount of people to pursue this further. So, I am considering it. For now, let’s welcome Luke Grundman to the world. A big congrats to Blake and Jenelle as they embark on this new journey. You two are awesome!
*Note: The baby on lunchboxes photo is not a composition of two images. We placed Luke on a shelf that spanned across the lunchboxes and then took the photo. Blake was holding a sheet and using his legs so the little dude wouldn’t roll off backwards. Jenelle is immediately to my left and just barely out of frame. I worked Photoshop to remove the shelf and bring Luke down. So, please, know that we mitigated as much risk as we could to get that shot.
