I run early in the morning, which means for half the year, it’s really, really dark out when I run. But it’s my neighborhood. I grew up here, and still know a number of folks in the area, so I’m okay with it.

This morning, I came upon a woman walking her (very large) dog. I stopped running and started to walk across the street (my typical reaction to someone with a dog…I just don’t want to stress the dog out). The dog started barking at me and straining at the leash. The woman was bracing herself to hold the dog back, and he was still making some forward progress. “Aren’t you afraid to be out jogging at this time of day?” she asked. I said I wasn’t since I knew plenty of folks along my route.

What I didn’t say…the only thing I’m afraid of is someone who can’t control her very large dog.

(William Goldman and/or Laurence Olivier may or may not be the root cause of my profound fear of dentists.)
