Day 17: The Baby’s Room

Woo, the first non-english film of the year! I imagine there’s a lot of Japanese, Chinese, and Korean films in my future, considering the sheer mass of awesome horror movies they churn out. But today is a Spanish movie, and it’s good! Ah, followers, remember good movies? No? Yeah, me either.

There isn’t a whole lot I can say about this one, because it is not your typical haunted house genre film. It’d be very easy for me to spoil the whole plot line. I loved the different take on it, for sure. Until about the end, for once you had a group of characters in a horror movie whose actions weren’t absolutely bat-shit and nonsensical. See a man in your baby’s room through the monitor? Fuck, call the police and get a knife! Install an alarm system immediately afterwards! Husband starts seeing things you don’t and nearly stabs you and the baby in the head? Fucking leave. Good show, horror movie characters! Your heads weren’t shoved up your asses. 

Is it sad I’m impressed by that? … Yeah, it’s sad.

There’s quite a few really creepy scenes here and quite a few silly ones too. It kind of felt like the movie wasn’t totally sure if it wanted to be a completely serious film or not and flipped back and forth. The old woman in this in particular kept snapping me out of whatever state of mind I was in while watching and the whole thing kept going down a few notches. 

Yet again, this was another movie whose overall value was detracted by the ending. It’s completely predictable and had me sighing during the last few shots. Everything up to that point, though? Pretty darn good, even the epic fight scene out of nowhere. (Seriously, what was that?)

Based on this, I definitely will be checking out the other “Films to Keep You Awake”. 

Although I’m not sure I want to see that intro five more times - a bloodied hand trying to catch a bouncing eyeball is one of the surrealist things I have ever seen. Weird collection logo-thing is weird.
