Just discovered Super Planet Crash, a web-based game by designer Stefano Meschiari. With your god-like powers you drop different size planets into the orbit of a star. Different sized planets and distances from the star create reactions and gravitational orbits that threaten to pull the entire system apart.

I’ve been seriously addicted to playing this “Mini Metro” web-based game created by Diplo Polo Club. It’s kind of like a hybrid of Sim City and Caterpillar, as your city expands you have to adjust existing subway lines and create more, all within structural limitations. The design of the game is simple and clean, reminiscent of Washington DC’s Metro map. It’s in beta form right now, with the possibility of expanding to an app soon, meaning I could build subways while I ride the subway. whoa.

Riding the wave of interest that companies like Nest and their smart thermostats have created, Quirky and GE have introduced Aros…a smart window unit with it’s own phone app where you pre-set temps and make adjustments, even based on your budget.

Google has launched the Music Timeline, an interactive timeline showing popular genres and releases since the dawn of “modern popular music” (around 1950’s), based on the libraries and activity of it’s Google Play members. Not exactly a perfect model, but it’s fun to play around in especially when you dig deeper into the decades and genres, and it’s just another fascinating visualization model based on the reams of data Google collects everyday.
Haunting tintype portraits by Victoria Will
During the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, Esquire commissioned photographer Victoria Will to shoot some of the illustrious attendees, she decided to have them sit for “tintype” style portraits, a popular photographic process in the the 1860’s. The results are stunning and hark back to a time when images felt like they captured a subject’s soul. There’s a larger gallery of the magical photos including one of the last portraits of the late Phillip Seymour Hoffman.

The International Space Station has been equipped with an HD camera and is now relaying high quality video back to earth. The videos are gorgeous, I especially love this one of Boston where you can see the moving cars.
