The clock started ticking Wednesday at 9:50 a.m., when the green light went out and the yellow one lit up in the communications room at the center of the day’s tornado drill.

“That puts everybody in place at their positions,” said Maribel Martinez, assistant emergency management coordinator of the Amarillo/Potter/Randall Office of Emergency Management.

“Please limit all (radio) traffic to weather-specific,” agency coordinator Kevin Starbuck said. “A spotter at Bushland is reporting a wall cloud. Confirming rotation.”
