One involved a teenaged girl being sold to marriage with a fiftysomething creeper who was neglectful and controlling and, ya know, very definitely was guilty of marital rape. A fiftysomething creeper who married her knowing she was the daughter of his ex. A man who eventually was killed by her machinations.

The other involved a consensual romantic relationship between two adults who may certainly have been committing adultery, yes, but were also very much in love — to the point where one’s murder in the hands of her legally married husband (whom she left) lead him down a path of obsessive revenge for god knows how many hundred years. 

Tell me which ‘relationship’ ‘counts’ again.

Ok, first off, there is absolutely no evidence suggesting Leopold ever so much as touched Regina—in fact, she was largely upset about the fact that her husband was still in love with his dead wife and never paid attention to her. He was hardly a creeper, and he certainly didn’t deserve to be betrayed by someone he trusted and then murdered.

But Regina and Leopold were married. Milah and Hook were not. Hook is in no way related to Emma no matter how much you twist the family tree. And he certainly didn’t raise Baelfire, whereas Regina became Snow’s stepmother when she was a child and had an active hand in raising her as a family.

Oh. My God. This is like, the most terrifying post I’ve read.

This was a fifty-sixty year old man who decided he wanted to marry an 18-year-old girl WHOM HE HAD NEVER MET, and then DIDN’T CARE THAT SHE DIDN’T CONSENT. He literally did not care. The only person who says “Yes” in the proposal scene is Cora — his ex-girlfriend, whom he recognized, btw, so he knew he was proposing to his ex’s teenage daughter — and LEOPOLD! DIDN’T! CARE!

Hardly a creeper? How does “reading Regina’s DIARY and then PUNISHING HER FOR WHAT HE READS” sound to you? Violating her privacy, reading her personal, private thoughts, and then punishing her when he dislikes them.

This, from the man who tells the Genie that is only wish is for the happiness of all his subjects. Who tells the Genie, “I know [Regina] is unhappy,” makes it clear he KNOWS he will never love her the way she wants, but ISN’T DOING SHIT ABOUT MAKING HER HAPPY. He forced her to marry him and did FUCK ALL when he knew she was unhappy. In fact, as “Quite A Common Fairy” tells us, he went out of his way to neglect her by leaving her behind while he went prancing through meadows or some shit with Snow!

Also — it doesn’t matter that there’s “no evidence” Leopold “so much as touched” Regina. By that token, we never saw Milah and Rumple do the frick frack paddy whack, so how do we know Bae is even their child, amirite? I mean, it doesn’t matter that they were married and were husband and wife — literally no evidence that they ever touched their genitals together, y’all. My theory is that Baelfire was Reul Ghorm’s changeling baby!

My point? Marital rape is so clearly implied by Leopold’s abusive behavior and the context of the situation (are you telling me you think a middle-aged man played checkers on his wedding night with the unwilling eighteen-year-old he forced to marry him?) that it doesn’t matter that we don’t have a signed confession from Leopold. We know he doesn’t give a crap about Regina’s consent. He proved that in the proposal scene.

Handwaving and dismissing abuse and marital rape is terrifying and you need to stop talking and think seriously about what you’re doing.

We are not just talking about fictional things that happen to fictional characters here. These are things that happen to REAL PEOPLE in REAL PLACES all over the fucking world. In this case, OUAT is replicating a very real pattern of abusive behavior. The story of Leopold and Regina is the story of a powerful white man abusing his authority in order to control, abuse, and rape a girl of color. This is not only never addressed by the fictional narrative, but actually DISMISSED by the fandom! How terrifying is that?!
