River City Tanlines’ I’m Your Negative. First before I go into my review, look at that cover. Seriously, look at it for a minute. What kinda music would you expect to hear if you are like me and had never heard of this band before finding it in the crap box? I’ll tell what I suspected, maybe some rock-ish bluegrass or some funky old country-ish music like Those Darlings, cept you know with dudes in the band. If that’s what you thought too, you, like I, thought wrong.
River City Tanlines is a rock, probably alternative rock group (I never know what title means what, really); they are part punk with a hint of Delta blues thrown in for good measure. The singer, Alicja Trout (and I didn’t mistype, that’s how the internet spells her name), kinda reminds me, vocal-wise, of The Kills' Alison Mosshart.
I really enjoyed this band from Memphis, TN. I don’t have any favorite songs yet, but I kinda like the album just as a whole.
Although I have one complaint. The title track, and it’s also the first track on the album, “I’m Your Negative,” sounds awfully close to the White Stripes’ “Rag and Bone” music wise that is. Just saying.
These Green Eyes’ Relapse to Recovery. Crap Box find that I picked up for it’s cover. I had no clue what genre of music this band played, who made up the band or anything. Never heard of them before. Graphic designers are suckers for packaging.
Listening to this album was like stepping back in time to junior high and the early years of high school. It’s that kinda angsty music that you just know was written just for you when you are selfish and hormone charged.
They band is talented though, I’ll give them that. I really like the drum beats in most of the songs. It’s strong and hard. Just what you need to feel indignant towards adults. And the rest of the musicians are strong players as well, very talented. The singer has an ok voice. It’s good, but at times it does that nasally thing that I can’t stand in male vocalists. Like he’s trying to yell but holding back so it gets all up in his nose.
Still, this one is going back into the Crap Box. I listened to the whole thing, and I rocked out a bit and day dreamed of my plaid flannel & JNCO jeans days a little. If I had a younger sibling or relative, I’d totally snag it for him/her. But I don’t, so someone else can find a teenager to give it to.

You me At Six’s Hold Me Down. Time for more Crap Box Music Reviews! I like the cover art of this CD, hence it was plucked from the Crap Box. However, the dudes on the back of the case (ok mainly the one I think is the front man) look kinda douchey.
With that judgmental impression in mind, I was pretty sure this was gonna be a CD of whiney/nasally rock.
I was half-right. They are actually not bad. The singer is not nasally which is a huge plus in my book. Still, they are a dime-a-dozen rock group. They are probably good for widespread appeal and commercial viability, but the present nothing new.
While I don’t mind listening to them I find myself listening to the CD as though it were playing in a dept. store. Tapping my foot as I browse through items I don’t need to spend my money on but not really paying attention to what I’m listening to. Therefore, this one is going back into the crap box.
Research Turtles, Research Turtles. Did you you just read the name of this band? If so then you should get why I picked this one up from the crap box.
The pace of their music is frustratingly slow. Especially on the second song on the album, “Damn.” It reminds me of a slow version of some 80s song that I can’t think of the name at the moment (which is typical of me). The next song, “Mission” picks up the pace a bit, but that song needs to be even faster than the others. It’s like they are scared of messing up and are therefore taking it slow, like it’s a beginner rock-band course. The more I listen, the more I wish they would just hurry the eff up.
It’s the kind of music that good for just standing there and listening too instead of getting worked up into a frenzy of energy. But it has the feel of music that was intended to work you up into a frenzy…if they would just pick up the pace. ¬.¬
Now, “The Riff Song” fits it’s beat. It’s not a fast song and it doesn’t sound like it should be a fast song either. It’s kinda Lenny Kravitz-esque.
And, ok, “Tomorrow” gets away with it too, but that’s just b/c is has that beach music sound that can pull of a lazy beat.
“Into A Hole” got skipped seconds into it starting to play though b/c my immediate reaction to the opening chords was “too effing slow.” “A Feeling” got longer play time, but I think it may still be “Into A Hole” just with a different name.
“925” starts off with a good fast pace and the music keeps it up. The singer…well he tries his damnedest to slow it back down. I think his band mates finally decided to say “screw you, this needs to be fast.”
They aren’t a bad band. I just feel like their music needs to have a faster tempo. Back to the crap box though. If I can find it*.
*Ok, so when editorial did that big clean out of their files and stuff (see my tumblr posts featuring the awesome publicity photos I got from that), they moved the crap box into the kitchen. After, I dunno, a week or two maybe it disappeared. I have yet to find it again. Maybe it’s just gone, though I’m sure we still get crap so where would they put that? This mystery will be solved. Maybe.
The Octopus Project’s Golden Beds. I picked this one from the Crap Box b/c of it’s cover art. Wouldn’t you? What are those anyway? Giant ghost hamsters? I think they are giant ghost hamsters. With long armed ghost men, of course.
Anyway, there are 5 songs on this CD. I like them all really. It’s really good working music. Only two of the songs have lyrics (I think…I’m pretty sure of this. I just listened to the damn thing) the other three are all instrumental.
Um, yeah that’s about it. I liked it. I burned it to my iTunes if that is how you describe that process. Ok, moving on…
Crap Box Find: Young Mammals, Carrots.
Ok, technically I did not find this in the crap box. It was sent in to my work though, it’s just that one of the writers kept the CD instead of dropping it in the Crap Box. He was kind enough though to put the music in my drop folder so I could put it in my iTunes and give it a listen (and therefore, when I couldn’t find an images of the CD on the internet, I didn’t have one to just scan as I’ve done in the past–so you got a pic of the band instead).
The MySpace page for this Houston, TX, group says they’re “Indie/PowerPop” — I say they’re Fun. Fun should be a music genre, in my opinion.
That’s really all I have though. They’re just a fun group. I really enjoyed the whole CD especially the first song “Confetti.” The moment it started playing I knew I was going to like this group.
Sophie Barker’s Earthbound. The cover prepared me for this Crap Box pick so I did not make my fellow designers suffer through it on the stereo.
Yup, it’s another CD of “chick music,” cept this is the kind that you listen to when you are feeling down about life, love, yourself, how many cookies you ate that you shouldn’t have.
I have not and will not put this on my iTunes b/c it will depress me when it comes as I have my iTunes on permanent shuffle. But I kept it b/c sometimes a chick just needs to listen to some mopey girl music.
The Blue Hit’s Move In. I picked this one from the Crap Box b/c I liked the simplicity of the cover design.
When I brought it back I played it on the stereo for my dept. so we could all hear it. Yeah, we have two big metal fans in my dept. and everyone else wasn’t much impressed anyway as well.
I like the group and the CD ok. I call it “girl music.” Chick singer, kinda slow pace. I liked the songs “Boysgirls” and “Be Serious” the most off the album.
The CD doesn’t have much pep to it for the most part so I apologize that this is a pretty lack-luster review.
