When Johnson moved to Washington, D.C., as Rep. Kleberg’s aide, he moved into the Dodge Hotel, where several other congressional aides lived. He first lived in a basement room, which he shared with a roommate, with toilet and showering facilities shared with some 18 others. His rent at the time was $20 per month.
