“How do people make it through life without a sister?” -SC

The other day someone asked me what it was like to have sisters.

In short, it’s the greatest thing I have. My mom told us when we were little that all we have in the world is each other; that they (my parents) will die, friends and lovers will come and go, but we will always have one another to depend on. So, we have a song, “I’m Gonna Be (500 miles)” and a motto, “All for one, one for all.”

“The mildest, drowsiest sister has been known to turn tiger if her sibling is in trouble."  ~Clara Ortega

The truth is that they are so a part of my life, that asking me what it is like to have them is like asking me what it feels like to have an arm. It feels like nothing. I don’t know, because I have never been without them. What does it feel like to breathe?

"I, who have no sisters or brothers, look with some degree of innocent envy on those who may be said to be born to friends."  ~James Boswell

My mom’s statement might have been a little dramatic, but I can’t imagine being an only child. I would feel very alone.

No one understands me better, faster, and easier than they do.

"A sister can be seen as someone who is both ourselves and very much not ourselves - a special kind of double."  ~Toni Morrison
