Hey, as it gets cooler, I'm looking to get a few Harris tweed jackets on eBay. Is there anything in particular I should be looking out for when sifting through them online? Seeing a lot of low prices, like $30 or so. Should that be a red flag? Or a bargain?

Sounds about right. I think tweed is kinda having a resurgence right now among #menswear bloggers (“now” being a relative term over the past 1-3 years, maybe more), but generally you see tons of tweed jackets sitting at most thrift store racks.

For a good long while, tweed wasn’t exactly “on trend” by any sort of means and I’m sure that’s why so many ended up in donation bins.

Lucky for you, this means you’ll be able to find a good assortment of them at a really good price. Some people might find a lot of the patterns of the tweed kind of ugly, but I think they’re great for the colder weather.

Finding a Harris Tweed jacket for $30 (or any price you would consider a “steal”) isn’t that uncommon on eBay. Even if you consider alteration costs, you’re still likely to be well south of $100 for a great jacket made from a beautifully woven cloth. Definitely a bargain.

I’ve collected several tweed jackets (some Harris, some not) over time and I think the most I ever paid for one was $20 shipped via eBay. The rest I found thrifting and had altered. They’re one of my favorite casual jackets to wear with denim, an OCBD, wool necktie and geometric printed silk pocket square. The colors in the fabric are really robust, so you can come away with some great combinations even with just one jacket.

Good hunting!
