I know that Canada has had a female Prime Minister.  But I also feel that Kim Campbell was given the short end of the stick after Brian Mulroney’s tenure as PM.  Campbell is a Conservative (former MP and PM for the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada), and I may not agree with all of her politics, but granted she’s leagues better than the Conservatives in power now. (side note: the current Conservative Party of Canada and the Progressive Conservatives are not the same parties, the cureent CPs is an amalgam of the old Reform Party and extreme right wing members of the Progressive Conservatives, Joe Clark refused to have the entire PC Party merged with the Reformers to become the Canadian Alliance).

Campbell was elected leader of the Progressive Conservatives while they were still the ruling party in the House of Commons.  Mulroney saw the writing on the wall.  He and his party had done enough damage that the Canadian voting populace was ready to toss him and his cohorts out on their ears.  Not long after Campbell won the leadership, that very thing happened.  The Progressive Conservatives lost winning only two seats and losing official party status while the Liberals went onto a majority.

History is kind of repeating itself in a way right now.  Unless Harper can actually run a legitimate and honest campaign.
